Montfortbrücke Feldkirch: removal and new building for more flood protection

A significant structural change is tackled in Feldkirch: the Montfort Bridge, which represents an essential transport connection, is to be demolished and rebuilt in June 2025. This is done as part of a comprehensive flood protection project that the city is to protect against future flood events. The first preparatory work begins in March 2025 to lay the basics for the new building.

The main goal of this renewal is to modernize the technical infrastructure and to protect the city from so -called hundred -year flood events. The new bridge is increased between 0.9 and 1.4 meters, which ensures that the bridge base does not reach the future flood level. This measure is also intended to help minimize the risk of decorations that could be caused by drift material in the Ill. At the same time, the slimmer construction will increase the flow capacity of the river.

traffic during the construction period

During the construction work, traffic is diverted via a temporary bridge in order to keep the impairments for drivers as low as possible. The existing route is preserved for the city that is permanent in the city. However, turning left from the suburb towards Liechtenstein is not possible. Public transport will largely remain unaffected, only smaller adjustments in the timetable are planned.

During this time,

cyclists are guided by a detour via the Holy Cross Bridge and the Illsteg. Pedestrians can use a makeshift stem that is built next to the provisional bridge. These measures are intended to ensure that traffic can also flow as far as possible during the construction phase.

completion by the end of 2026

After the current Montfort Bridge was demolished, the new building will be built in the coming months. The entire project, which also includes the alignment of the surrounding traffic areas, is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. The total costs for this comprehensive project amount to around 24 million euros, which makes it a essential investment project for the city.
