Tempo 150 on Vorarlberg's highways: approvals and concerns!

Dornbirn, Österreich - In the current government negotiations between the FPÖ and ÖVP, a controversial speed limit is up to 150 km/h on the motorways. The mobility organization VCÖ warns of possible negative consequences of this measure. In a conversation with the UN, Vorarlberg's governor Markus Wallner expressed that it was often difficult on the Rhine Valley motorway to keep the current speed limit of 100 km/h. However, a rethink seems to be stated by the population, as numerous voices show for an increase in the limits.

The Bregenzerwald Andi Schneider is convinced that 110 and 130 km/h are not sufficient. "About 150 is ideal," he says. However, he emphasizes that in certain conditions, such as in tunnels, a high speed is not justified. Helmut Sampl from Dornbirn sees the current regulation as sufficient, but does not have any objections to a slight increase, while Eveline Hambammer from footach, which often travels long distances, also considers the idea to be positive, but also warns not to overlook dangerous zones. Samuel Valenta even "sensibly" calls speed and illustrates that he wants to get to the goal faster, whereby he also suggests a differentiated regulation for different motorway sections.

social support for speed limits

In addition, statistics show that speed limits are approved in the general public. According to a Eurobarometer survey from 2011, 68% of EU citizens support: Lower driving speeds for emission reduction inside. In Switzerland, acceptance of speed limits has increased significantly over the years. In a survey in 2005, 86% of drivers already spoke out for such regulations. Recent studies from 2024 show an almost split opinion in Austria, with 47% supporters: inside and 47% opponents: inside of reduced speed limits. These developments throw a new light on the ongoing discussions about the speed limit in Austria and put people's opinions at the center of transport policy.

Vol.at reported on the views on speed limit and in addition to this is an analysis of the Environmental Federal Office for the general acceptance of tempolimits.
