Politics in the clinch: Bregenz-Haat and the dispute over the railway project

The upcoming modernization of the Bregenz-Haupt stop has caused turbulent political discussions in the past few days, especially in the run-up to the upcoming state election. Bregenz Mayor Michael Ritsch from the SPÖ expressed concerns that the planned conversions could pave the way for a larger and possibly problematic expansion of the rail infrastructure along the pipeline.

After a press conference by Ritsch on Wednesday there was a heated debate. Governor Markus Wallner and State Councilor Marco Tittler, both of the ÖVP, said that in principle they had nothing against the expansion of the stop, but insist that such measures should only serve to improve existing infrastructure. The main goal must be the increase in capacity for longer trains, not the creation of additional tracks.

The position of the Greens

In contrast to this, State Councilor Daniel Zadra from the Greens emphasized in his own communication that the infrastructural adjustments were necessary in order to meet rising traffic questions. He recognizes the need for a platform extension as essential in order to make public transport future -proof. Zadra points out that a multi -track expansion in the lowlands is important, but should initially be tailored to current needs without endangering existing projects.

On Wednesday, however,

Michael Ritsch pointed out that the planned platform extensions towards Lochau would negatively influence the newly planned bike and footpath tour on the pipeline. He also sees the danger that the underwire solution for the railway line in Lindau is in danger through the above -ground expansion. Ritsch explained that an additional track on the surface could destroy the extensive investments in the pipeline and that the local recreation area and other planned infrastructure projects would also endanger.

urgency of the project

In the course of the current discussion, Zadra warns against the possible consequences of a further delay in the project. From 2029, according to Zadra, numerous trains could no longer start the stop, which would result in considerable restrictions for local transport in Bregenz and in the Rhine Valley. He calls for a clear commitment of the city of Bregenz to redesign the stop to initiate the next phase of planning.

The favorite solution provides for an extension of the platforms to the north. This should protect both the property rights of the residents and the attractiveness of the area. In addition, additional access from the north is to be created to improve accessibility. As early as 2022, other variants were rejected due to their disadvantages, and the recurring political statements illustrate the area of tension in which the decision -makers are located. Ritsch’s announcement of the press conference promptly led to timely communications on the part of the Greens and the blacks about the further procedure.
