Bregenz in dispute: Pedestrian zone endangers security and economy!
The city of Bregenz is the focus of a heated discourse on its pedestrian zone, which is considered a controversial project. Vice Mayor Sandra Schoch vehemently defended the pedestrian zone and emphasized that this measure was indispensable in order to enable citizens to move safe. According to Schoch, the support for this zone is significant for both the residents and the business, since surveys make it clear that the frequencies in Kirchstrasse have increased. Mayor Michael Ritsch from the SPÖ made it clear that an application for dismantling was rejected and the pedestrian zone will remain after petitions were also examined in this direction, as Vol.at reported.
On the other hand, there are critical voices from the citizens' initiative "Call of help of the residents: Interior and businesses of the Bregenz city center". Spokesman Werner Braun expressed his concerns that the frequency in the pedestrian zone was decreasing and warned of rising vacancies. He also brought up the environmental problem and explained that the blocking of the road would cause an additional 200 tons of CO₂ per year. The topic of security has also been addressed because rescue vehicles on Kirchstrasse, due to the bollards who delimit the pedestrian zone, have difficulty maneuvering. Under these circumstances, the FPÖ calls for a partial return to the encounter zone with more flexible entry times for the residents, while the ÖVP wants to carefully check the access times without fundamentally questioning the existing pedestrian zone.
