Election in Vorarlberg: ÖVP stays in front, FPÖ strongly on the climb

In the recent elections in Vorarlberg, the ruling ÖVP, led by Governor Markus Wallner, has lost voices, but claimed its position as the strongest force. According to the foresight, which contain both election results and forecasts for postal voting, it can be seen that the ÖVP remains in front despite losses. The election took place two weeks after the National Council election and is considered an important event for the political landscape of the region.

The rise of the FPÖ is particularly noteworthy, which could almost double its share of voices compared to the last election. This development means that the FPÖ is displacing the previous coalition partner Greens from second place. The SPÖ and the NEOS are behind it and thus show that a realignment in the state parliament could be imminent.

Voting turnout and participant

In total, nine lists took part in the election, four of which did not make it to the state parliament. The turnout was significantly higher at over 68 percent than in the previous elections in 2019, which indicates an increased interest of citizens in political decisions.

The challenges for the ÖVP could increase, however, since the Greens, which have been part of the state government since 2014, could also lose influence, while the FPÖ promises a potential coalition with its new strength. Black and blue, a possible new government variants, would even enable a two-thirds majority.

A temporary end result is expected for 6:00 p.m. This result will already include the majority of the postal votes and could provide further information about future government formation in Vorarlberg.
