Villach surprised: Less minus and more assets in 2024!

Villach, Österreich - The city of Villach has completed the financial year 2024 with a surprisingly lower minus than originally forecast. On April 29, 2025, the invoice was published, which shows a minus of 5.18 million euros - a reduction of almost two thirds compared to the predicted 15.06 million euros. Finance officer and Mayor Günther Albel sums up the positive development and emphasizes that the result was better than budgeted. He thanks the departments in the magistrate for their careful handling of tax money and emphasizes that there were no higher expenses than in the budget.

The city's financial management shows that the measures to renovate budgets have had an effect. Savings of 3.29 million euros in personnel costs and 13.57 million euros in the property expenses were generated. Despite these positive aspects, however, there was a significant increase in transfer payments to the state of Carinthia, which climbed a total of 69.41 million euros in 2024, which corresponds to an increase of 12.34 million euros or 21.6 percent compared to the previous year.

Financial key figures and investments

The most important key figures for the invoice to be completed provide a comprehensive overview of the financial situation of the city:

Net result after reserves total assets Investments debt without fee households
279.75 million euros 285.61 million euros - 5.18 million euros 668.80 million euros 32.6 million euros 71.53 million euros

The income from the federal government's earnings spent a total of 103.61 million euros and thus was 1.48 million euros below the forecasts. These have been stagnating for three years and are a challenge for municipal financing. Nevertheless, the income from local tax with 45.19 million euros is an indicator of the stable labor market and economic situation in Villach. The city invested a total of 32.6 million euros in 2024, with an important part, around 10.47 million euros, flowing in educational institutions. Investments in renewable energies also led to savings of 500,000 euros in energy costs.

claims and outlook

In view of the challenge due to increasing transfer services, Mayor Albel appeals to the federal and state governments to implement necessary reforms for sustainable financial development. In a broader context, the financial framework conditions that are available are decisive for the fulfillment of their diverse tasks, which increasingly include social security, integration, education and climate protection. The need for adequate financial resources is more important than ever in order to create scope for action and to be able to react to unforeseen stress, as the German City Day emphasizes in its demands.

The city of Villach has shown a remarkable financial stability in recent years, which, despite the challenges due to increasing transfer services and stagnating earnings, could be secured. With a solid total assets of 668.80 million euros and a forward -looking financial policy, the city shows the way for sustainable future development.
