Four traffic in Austria: urgent wake -up call for more security!

Graz-Umgebung, Steiermark, Österreich - Last week there was a tragic increase in traffic accidents in Austria, in which four car drivers lost their lives. According to ots there were a total of three fatal accidents that had some alarming circumstances.

On Wednesday, May 14, 2025, a serious accident occurred in the Graz area district, Styria. A 25-year-old car driver turned his vehicle in front of a tunnel entrance and drove as a ghost driver onto the highway, where he shaved about 10 km against the prescribed direction of travel. Tragically, there was a frontal collision with a 56-year-old car driver, in which both drivers died despite immediate rescue measures.

Overall, two road users had an accident on a motorway last week, while two more died on one state road. The Styria region recorded two of the four traffic fatalities, while Lower Austria and Salzburg each had to complain.

An analysis of the possible causes shows that disregard for the gods and forbidden, carelessness or distraction as well as a lack of adaptation of the speed must be considered as the main factors. Of the deceased drivers, there were also two foreign nationals.

In the period from January 1 to May 18, 2025, there were a total of 110 traffic fatalities in Austria (preliminary number). In comparison, it was only 99 in the same period of the previous year. In 2023, the numbers were even 122, which indicates the continuous monitoring of the accident. This data is electronically recorded by the police organs and regularly transmitted to Statistics Austria

The aim of this recording is to observe traffic safety in order to develop preventive measures and to inform the public adequately about risks in road traffic. The legal basis for the statistical recording of road traffic accidents are anchored in the road traffic accident statistics law.

These tragic incidents must be understood as a wake -up call to further increase the safety in road traffic and protect live. Road users should be aware of the dangers and drive responsibly.
