background and meaning
The street festival is not only a celebration, but also a political sign in a time when LGBTIQ rights are still threatened in many parts of the world. In countries such as Iraq, same-sex relationships are punished with up to 15 years in prison, while in Uganda the anti-Homosexuality law even provides for the death penalty for "serious homosexuality". Such laws and discrimination mean that LGBTIQ people are often exposed to violence and intimidation. Amnesty International reports on numerous negative developments and an increase in discriminatory rhetoric, especially in countries such as Hungary and Turkey, where pride events are suppressed and participants are attacked.
vienna.at Supporters will be. Also 5min.at emphasizes that the street festival sets a significant sign of a colorful and diverse society. The global situation of the LGBTI rights gives Amnesty International , which indicates the challenges and progress in the global LGBTIQ movement.
