The USA increases military presence: destroyers moved to Israel!

The military tensions in the Middle East are increasing, while the United States shift their military resources to support Israel in the current dealing with Iran. According to OE24 , the US-Military has relocated the destroyer "Uss Thomas Hudner" to the eastern Mediterranean. A second destroyer could follow to strengthen the military presence. In addition, the US air weapon combat jets are increasingly active in the region. These troops are part of the reaction to possible Iranian retaliation attacks that are understood as the consequence of Israel's recent attacks on Iranian goals.

The decision to relocate the ships was also confirmed by the AP news agency, which states that the navy ordered the destroyer "USS Thomas Hudner" especially because of his ability to defend ballistic rockets to the eastern Mediterranean. Other military units, including additional air forces, are also intended to strengthen security measures and offer protection for American staff and facilities in the region.

US military strategies and regional effects

The US government emphasizes that the previous military relocations are not synonymous with a participation in Israeli attacks on Iran. Above all, these operations aim to protect the US troops and support Israel. Around 40,000 US soldiers have been stationed in the Middle East in recent months, which is an increase compared to the usual 30,000 soldiers. This number had risen up to 43,000 in October 2023, Triggers, in the context of the growing tensions between Israel and Iran as well as the attacks on ships in the Red Sea by militias supported by Iran.

US defense minister Lloyd Austin has also ordered marine cruisers and destroyers who can fire ballistic rockets in order to be prepared for possible attacks from Iran. A fighter jet squadron is also sent to the region to increase the military presence and take various eventualities into account.

political developments and negotiations

The situation is further complicated by the threats of Iran, the retaliation for the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Hanija and the Hisbollah commander Fuad Schukr. However, while Israel has known herself to kill Schukr, it does not comment on the killing of Hanija. In the middle of these tensions, US President Joe Biden Israel assures support against the threats from Iran and asks Prime Minister Netanyahu for quick negotiations on a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Negotiations on a possible ceasefire and hostage agreement are still in progress. Israel plans to send a delegation to Cairo to promote the talks. Germany's Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, however, emphasized that military support is currently not planned and that a mandate of the Bundestag would be required.

While the geopolitical situation is further exhilarating, Israel's national security advisor Zachi Hanegbi warns of the consequences of an attack on Israel, which would result in a "very painful price". Despite the tense situation, Prime Minister Netanyahu expresses that he does not believe that the region is facing a war and that Iran does not want a comprehensive conflict.
