Unknown attacks jogger in Liesingbach: Perpetrators on the run!

In the night of May 26, 2025, a jogger in the 23rd district of Vienna was the victim of an attack. The incident occurred along the Liesingbach around 10 p.m. The unknown perpetrator, who was under 30 years old, persecuted the jogger, clutched her and threw her to the ground. The woman fought out with loud screaming, but the attacker fled in an unknown direction before she was able to get support. Investigations were initiated by the State Criminal Police Office in Vienna, South branch. The perpetrator was described as male, wore a yellow, short-sleeved T-shirt and black three-quarter trousers. The police ask for clues that can be submitted anonymously at any police station or directly at the State Criminal Police Office in Vienna on 01-31310-57800.

The increasing crime in Vienna is repeatedly becoming the subject of public discussion. According to a publication of [heute.at] (https://www.heute.at/s/enthuellt-das-s--hotspots-der-criminalitaet- 100177717), Karl Nehammer, the Federal Chancellor and former interior minister, has submitted extensive crime figures for Vienna. This data, however, that only represent a partial aspect of the security situation, show that a total of 66,878 crimes were registered in the first half of 2021. A comparison with the previous year shows a decline of 10.9 percent, which is partly due to the restrictions during the lockdown.

crime development and feeling of security

The Vienna crime index, as listed in a report by Sicherheit-zeitung.at, documents an increase in crime after a phase of the decline during the Covid period. Experts warn that Vienna is part of the less safe cities in a European comparison, which requires additional measures to increase police presence and improve the feeling of security of the population.

The hotspots of crime, which are classified in Vienna after districts, are particularly striking. While the inner city experienced a decline of 47.8 percent to 2,176 crimes, districts such as Wieden, Margareten and Floridsdorf have an increase in crimes. Among the districts with most registered crimes in the first half of 2021 are:

  • favorites: 8,272 crimes
  • Floridsdorf: 5,590 crimes
  • Donaustadt: 5,543 crimes

These trends raise questions about the security level in the city. The clearance rate was 46.6 percent in the first half of 2021, which means a slight increase of 2.1 percent compared to the previous year. Despite the figures, there is concern about incidents such as the attack on the jogger, who directs attention to the need for preventive measures.
