Trump and Putin in conversation: Hope for ceasefire in the Ukraine conflict!

On May 19, 2025, US President Donald Trump had a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin after advising himself with Ukrainian head of state Wolodymyr Selenskyj. The main goal of this conversation was to move Putin to a ceasefire in the ongoing Ukraine conflict. Despite the efforts for a diplomatic solution, the situation remains tense, especially after direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul have so far been unsuccessful, as Krone

The Russian army has taken settlements in the Sumy (Marjine) and Donetsk (Novooleniwka) region in the last few days, which was partially confirmed by Ukrainian military observers. In the meantime, heads of state and government from Great Britain, the USA, Germany, France and Italy increase the pressure on Russia, with discussions about possible sanctions, Russia should not seriously strive for a ceasefire.

Putin's rejection of the ceasefire

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin did not respond to the demands for a 30-day ceasefire made by Ukraine and its western allies. Instead, he offers to resume direct negotiations in Istanbul on May 15th. In a further step, he plans promptly talks with the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, such as Putin was ready for serious negotiations without priority, but did not rule out a ceasefire. The Russian spokesman Dmitri Peskow claimed that the Russian leadership wanted to think about the demand for a ceasefire, but expressed a negative attitude in public. "Russia cannot be intimidated," said Peskow. The vice -chief of the Russian National Security Council, Dmitri Medledew, also rejected a ceasefire.

criticism of Russian demands

Politologist Tatjana Stanowaja does not expect peace soon and sees telephone calls as unsuitable for conflict solutions. Russia adheres to its maximum demands, which include the waiver of Ukraine on NATO accession and the recognition of annexed areas. In the past, the Ukrainian President Selenskyj had accused Putin of only faking a ceasefire to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany.

The last meeting between Ukrainian and Russian representatives took place in Istanbul, where both sides exchanged various topics, but could not reach an agreement. The meeting remained short and was not accessible to the press. The Ukrainian delegation rejected numerous claims as "unacceptable" while Russia described its position as unchanged.

The current situation remains tense, since both sides were responsible for violations of a suddenly proclaimed three -day break. The path to a sustainable solution still seems to be far away, and the signals that come from both the Kremlin and the Ukrainian side illustrate the ongoing differences.

In view of these developments, it remains to be seen how the situation will continue to develop and whether the announced discussions between Putin and Erdoğan will lead to progress in the negotiations, or whether the conditions remain unacceptable for everyone involved.
Tagesschau indicates that a permanent peace solution is not in sight without clear agreements and compromise.
