The Vatican as a neutral negotiating location

The openness of the Vatican for Peace Non Foreigned is not new. Parolin referred to the commitment of Vatican diplomacy, without working on peace without military or political interests. The challenge is to establish the trust between those involved, which according to the Parolin is central to any dialogue.

The new Pope, Leo XIV, who was elected Francis on May 8, recently met Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj and his wife for a private sud. Selenskyj saw Pope Leo XIV a symbol of hope for millions of people who hope for peace. He thanked the Pope for the offer to use the Vatican as a possible place for direct negotiations between the warring parties.

The current negotiations and the position of Ukraine

Selenskyj has ordered the creation of a national negotiation group and emphasizes that Ukraine continues to adhere to an unconditional ceasefire. In previous talks, among others in Istanbul, however, there had been threats on the part of the Russian delegation, which made negotiations difficult. At the same time, the EU Commission under Ursula from Leyen competed in order to strengthen the pressure on Russia through possible new sanctions.

lieutenants from the Ukrainian side signaled their willingness to conduct dialogues over different formats while pressure on Russia is increasing to compromise. This illustrates the urgent need that the parties to the conflict get to a table in order to overcome lost time and aging conflicts.

The current developments that are in the context of international diplomacy show the role of Vatican as a neutral intermediary in a complex geopolitical conflict. Cardinal to pray Cardinal to pray despite the challenges of the Situation in the Ukraine conflict for peace, remains a central message in these tense times.
