Trump inspires Putin call: Peace talks in sight?
In a significant phone call between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump expressed his enthusiasm and described the two-hour conversation as "excellent". The two heads of state discussed the critical situation in Ukraine, with Trump announcing immediate negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. Putin was also satisfied and described the conversation as "very, very informative and useful".
Trump emphasized the need for a peaceful solution to the Ukraine conflict and pointed out that a ceasefire could be in prospect as soon as a memorandum is worked out for future peace talks. Such a memorandum could make significant progress in the context of the negotiations. According to the press, both Trump and Putin have agreed to work on such a document with Ukraine.
The pressure on Russia is growing
While the talks between Trump and Putin took place, Ukrainians and Europeans require unconditional ceasefire to start peace talks. Europe has threatened Russia with new hard sanctions if Putin should not give in. US Vice President JD Vance also warned that the United States is in a “dead end” and that her patience was slowly at the end. This could possibly lead to a turning point in the negotiations if the political tensions continue to increase.
In addition, Trump expressed that he also wanted to address trade questions in an interview with Putin. The Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj, on the other hand, gives Trump responsibility for the continuing conflict since the Russian attack in February 2022. Selenskyj has accused Trump of taking over Russian propaganda, which further complicates the already tense situation.
a complex conflict situation
While Russia continues its attacks in Ukraine, the willingness to negotiate is still tense. The demands of Russia aim to capitulate Kiev, among other things, without offering security guarantees. This has led to a lack of trust between the parties to the conflict. Political negotiations fail because of conditions that can hardly be accepted by Ukraine ZDF.
The differences about security guarantees and the recognition of Ukrainian sovereignty are still decisive barriers for a solution. While both Trump and Putin are striving for peace talks, it remains uncertain whether they can actually overcome the deeply rooted conflicts.
