Discussion about the pedestrian zone in the Reutten Untermarkt: How further?
The debate about the pedestrian zone in Reutte undermarket has been a conversation for years. On Monday evening, citizens, entrepreneurs and politicians met in the Lina-Thyll hall of the music school to exchange their views and concerns about this controversial topic. Although the hall was not quite full, the interest in the event was noticeable.
Mayor Günter Salchner emphasized at the beginning that there has been a need for action for a long time. "Do we want to try something new, or do we let the topic rest in the worst case?" He asked the people present. These questions raise important considerations for the future of the sub -market, which should be both livable and economically viable.
The concerns of the entrepreneurs
The entrepreneurs present showed themselves skeptically towards the idea of a pedestrian zone. Many fear that this measure could harm their economic existence. Martin Leitner, owner of a shoe business, clearly expressed it: "If your own existence is at stake, you don't want to experiment for months." A survey carried out in advance among the business owners confirmed this trend: the majority spoke out against a pedestrian zone, which ultimately also prompted the Reutte business team to position itself against the project.
In a lecture, Florian Schweiger reported on the positive experiences from Landeck, where there has been a summer football zone since 2023. The first evaluations showed that acceptance among the visitors was great, even if not all entrepreneurs could count themselves lucky. But these empirical values did not change the skepticism of the Reutten entrepreneurs.
An all -round of the business came from the business owners: instead of a pedestrian zone, they want to revitalize the undermarket, not their calming. The desire for more parking spaces and fewer "accessories" such as flower troughs could be clearly heard. An entrepreneur critically noticed that the question should not be aimed at "how we calm down the sub -market", but how to keep it alive. This led to a lack of understanding on the part of the mayor, who then replied: "How? More traffic? What should I think of it?"
a split audience
Various municipal councils were also present on this evening. One of the initiators for discussion about the pedestrian zone, GR Margit Dablander from the Greens, was passionate about trying a temporary pedestrian zone. She advocated taking this step and causing evaluation afterwards. On the other hand, Vice Mayor Klaus Schimana (ÖVP) spoke to emphasize the concerns of the entrepreneurs. "They cannot allow themselves to be lost in sales. We have to take that into account!"At the end of the evening it was clear that the opinions diverge. Mayor Salchner announced that the discussions in the responsible committees and the municipal council will continue to make a decision soon. The question remains whether Reutte dares to take the bold step or continue to remain in the current situation.
