The first snow in the Allgäu: tips for the excursion to the Winter Wonderland

With the first snow that covered the Allgäu on Thursday night from Wednesday to Thursday, winter heralds the end of autumn. But don't worry, the sun is now showing itself after many gray days - and the upcoming weekend promises nice, albeit cool weather. It is the perfect opportunity to enjoy the last rays of the autumn sun and go on new excursions.

Here are some exciting suggestions for activities that you can take alone, with friends or the whole family. From cozy hikes to relaxing walks to animal experiences, there is something for everyone in the Allgäu.

autumnal hikes in the Allgäu

The picturesque landscape of the Allgäu invites you to cozy hikes. An ideal route in the Ostallgäu leads from Pfronten to the Aggenstein. Alternatively, you can explore the tub head or the Ofterwang Horn in the Oberallgäu. These hikes not only offer wonderful views, but also the opportunity to capture the last autumn beams. However, it is advisable to be particularly careful in winter conditions and to pay attention to the right equipment. Before the start, a look at the weather forecast or the webcams of the mountain stations should also be taken.

sun and walks on the lake

For those who prefer to take it a little quieter, there are wonderful walks around the Allgäu lakes. A particularly beautiful route is the seven -kilometer circular route around the Hopfensee in Ostallgäu, which offers breathtaking views of the Ammergau Alps. If you don't want to drive far, you can also visit Lake Niedersonthofen near Kempten or the Schwaltenweiher near Seeg - they are all ideal for relaxed tours in nature.

experience in the squirrel forest

The squirrel forest in Fischen in the Oberallgäu offers a very special experience for young and old. Here visitors can feed the small rodents. These trusting squirrels are not the only animals that inhabit the terrain; Eyles and crows also feel comfortable here and are ready to meet people. And for even more animal experiences, a game reserve near Tannheim offers, where wild boars, deer and wild sheep can be observed and fed.

A smaller wild enclosure in the Ostallgäu in Bernbeuren also offers the opportunity to experience the domestic wildlife up close.

Start of the Christmas market season

The anticipation for Christmas is increasing, because this weekend the Christmas market season begins in the Allgäu. In three places - Markt Rettenbach in Unterallgäu, Wiggensbach in the Oberallgäu and at Kronburg Castle - there will be mulled wine from Friday, delicious Christmas delicacies and many gifts.

An overview of all Christmas markets that will take place in the Allgäu in the coming weeks can be found here.

thermal visits to warm up

If the weather gets too cold, the numerous thermal baths in the Allgäu are just the thing. The Therme Bad Wörishofen, which was elected to the second best thermal bath in Germany in the 2022/2023 season, invites you to relaxing hours. But the crystal thermal baths in Schwangau and the thermal baths in Lindau also offer wellness with a sauna and swimming pool area. For real adventurous people, the adventure pools in the Oberallgäu, as well as the cambomare in Kempten and the Wonnemar in Sonthofen, are perfect destinations for family excursions.
