Renery in Austria: 171 cars already confiscated - the trend is rising!
The new razor control, which came into force on March 1, 2024 in Austria, already shows significant effects: a total of 171 vehicles were confiscated in just a few weeks. Affected drivers, who are more than 60 km/h or outside of more than 70 km/h in town, must expect the confiscation of their car. The state of Lower Austria is particularly affected by these measures, followed by Tyrol, as reported on 5min.at.
significant declines in the event of accidents
According to Klaus Robatsch from the Board of Trustees for Road Safety, the numbers are encouraging. In March 2024, the proportion of fatal accidents due to excessive speed was less than ten percent, which means a dramatic decline compared to an annual average of 24 percent. This regulation is intended to help keep dangerous speeders off the streets by finally moving in and auctioning the vehicle in the event of repeated abnormalities.
35 rapid vehicles were already confiscated in Tyrol in the end of 2024. Another concern of the experts is the introduction of a nationwide administrative criminal register in order to be able to identify repeat offenders faster. At the moment, the authorities can only insight at the district level, which makes it difficult to pursue racers, as reported by ORF. The need for a central database is in space to increase security on the Austrian roads.
The first months after the new regulation came into force show that the measures have an effect and that the safety in traffic could improve.
