East Tyrol tackles: garbage collection campaigns for a clean environment!
On March 8, 2025, the Waste Management Association East Tyrol (AWVO) started the annual garbage collection campaign #TU-E-EBA, which is repeated in collaboration with 33 municipalities. In Nikolsdorf, volunteers were involved in making an active contribution to environmental protection. This initiative is to be continued in other municipalities by the end of May in order to target the garbage problem in East Tyrol. Mayor Georg Rainer praised the volunteers and emphasized the importance of the campaign for the environment: "We are proud that the #TU-E-Day is part of it and has now established itself on a fixed appointment," said Rainer. The campaign is also supported this year by the Lebenshilfe Sillian, which produces robust garbage collections made of regional wood. In addition, pupils create the PHTL Lienz burner stamp to provide the pliers with logos.
parallel to the collection campaign, the AWVO provides information about the waste statistics in East Tyrol. According to the Waste Management Act, municipalities must record all waste and enter this data into the federal EDM portal. In East Tyrol, the annual waste volume is around 132 kg residual waste per inhabitant, which Tirol brings to the fifth place in comparison. An alarming result: The analysis shows that the residual waste could be reduced by about 57 % by improved waste separation. In addition, East Tyrol still has some catching up to do at the organic waste collection, since the average of 146 kg per inhabitant is reached. These grievances illustrate that there is still a need for action to better manage and reduce the waste, since 33 % of the residual waste consist of biodegradable waste that is no longer usable.
