Altstätten presents studies on flood security for Lienz

In the small village of Lienz, a significant step has been taken to protect the population from possible flood and murse hazards. The city of Altstätten has submitted a variety of variants to the federal government and the canton to evaluate various measures that could be interesting in the event of an issue by the Lienzer Bach.

On October 31, 2024, this variant course was presented to the public. Around 120 interested citizens took part in the information event, where specialist planners explained the various approaches. Under the circumstances of local geography, the Lienzer Bach is one of the most threatening waters in the region. The topographical location and the flow situation make it particularly susceptible to mischief, which requires urgent action.

presentation of the various proposed solutions

The variants discussed were both the proposal of a mening discharge in the Leui area and a confession in the area of the Furnis area. In order to ensure security against floods, an improvement in Lienzer Bach itself must also be considered.

The different variants were carefully weighed, each with specific advantages and disadvantages. The variant of letting the Lienzer Bach into the Bofelbach seemed particularly promising. This option could potentially increase the space for the impending mural freight. The discussion about these variants met with lively interest and polarized the opinions of those present.

Feed feedback from the population

During the event, the participants were given the opportunity to choose their preferred variant and reject less sensible solutions. The results show a split opinion: While the interrogation of the stream into the Bofelbach met with great interest, the suggestions for the expansion in the Leui area, which were not given any approval, were hardly adopted.

The city of Altstätten will submit the variant course in the coming days and the results of the information event for the preliminary examination of the federal and canton. There will then take place as to whether and which of the proposed variants can be implemented. Feedback will be expected by summer 2025.

Since the interests of the public are considered important, the population will also have the opportunity to bring in their concerns before final decisions are made. There may also be room for local organizations to participate in future complaints against the implementation plans.

Future funding and securing of the area is at the top of the agenda to minimize the risk of natural events. More information and details on this topic can be found in a detailed report www.nau.ch .
