Apprenticeship numbers in Tyrol are falling: Where does the future of training grow?

The current situation in Tyrol shows increasing numbers and developments in the field of training. According to a report by the Chamber of Commerce, there are currently 429 apprentices with a high school leaving certificate, 306 of whom attended an AHS and even have a completed degree. A total of 10,125 apprentices are now being trained in Tyrol, which corresponds to a slight decline of 1.3 percent compared to the previous year. The number of apprenticeships fell by two percent to 3,007, which illustrates the challenges in the training sector, especially in the trade, where the number of apprenticeship from 1,411 in 2023 has dropped to only 1,229, as reported.

A look at the different divisions

The different divisions of the training present a mixed picture. Especially in the industrial sector there was a strong growth with currently 1,300 apprentices. The areas of bank and insurance as well as transport and traffic also show positive developments. In tourism, a minimal increase could be found, while the area of business and craft went back slightly and now staying at 5,116 apprentices after it was 5,205 in the previous year. The information and consulting division also has a decline from 211 to 206 apprentices.

In addition, as part of a project by the Austrian Institute for Education Research in the Economy (IBW), professionalization in the field of validation practitioners is being worked on. The aim is to develop a qualification profile for these practitioners: inside, which is supported by the European Social Fund Plus (ESF+). This illustrates the strong endeavor after adapting and improving the training structures in Austria, as mentioned in a report by the IBW.
