Bishop Glettler demands more comprehensive processing of abuse cases

Innsbruck, Österreich - in Innsbruck, Bishop Hermann Glettler again emphasized how important the victim perspective is in the processing of abuse cases in the church. He commented on the ORF program "Tyrol today" and specified his recent criticism of the Tyrolean abuse study: Although this could be described as "needed", he was glad that the study was created at all. Glettler spoke of “shame” in terms of past abuse system in church homes and asked those affected for forgiveness. At the same time, he praised the study as valuable because it directs the focus on the victims, which he emphasized.

The controversial abuse study, which was commissioned two years ago by the diocese and the state of Tyrol, describes drastic grievances such as humiliations and violence in 400 pages. Despite his initial enthusiasm, the bishop distanced himself from certain aspects of the study, which did not seem sufficiently treated. According to Glettler, a broader survey would be necessary to better understand the pedagogical standards of the time. He announced that further steps with greater participation and contextualization should be undertaken, since people continue to report.

focus on prevention and responsibility

In addition, Glettler confirmed his commitment to preventive measures in the church. These include protective concepts for pastors and pastors, behind whom he is 100 percent. In the past, he described the failure in pedagogical care as "total failure" and expressed the need to recognize the experiences of the victims. Opinions and the foreword of the study, which has now been published as a book, show Glettler's serious efforts for transparency and education in one of the darkest chapters of ecclesiastical history.
