From the value of the memory - Volume 2: Insight in Tirol's Nazi past

In the country house, the presentation of the new collecting plant "From the value of the memory", Volume 2, recently took place. This publication deals intensively with the folk culture of Tyrol during the time of National Socialism, a topic that has so far received little attention in research. Numerous interested parties, including official staff, took part in the event, which underlines the great interest in dealing with these dark chapters of Tyrolean history.

The State Councilor for Science, Cornelia Hagele, opened the event together with Christoph Haidacher, the director of the Tyrolean State Archives, and Dirk Rupnow, the dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and History at the University of Innsbruck. Haile emphasized the importance of a critical examination of the history for the cultural identity of Tirol and emphasized that eleven scientific contributions have been incorporated into the anthology, which focus on brass music, choir and other traditions.

Promotion of memory culture

In order to further strengthen the culture of remembrance, the Tyrolean state government has decided to extend the funding focus by 2028 and to increase the annual funding from EUR 100,000 to 125,000 euros. "This measure is a sign of responsible use of our past and a worthy commemoration of the victims of the Nazi regime," said Hagele. The important connection between folk culture and history is processed in the new research contributions that have been funded by the state government.

The contributions cover a comprehensive spectrum that ranges from the Tyrolean brass music bands and organized choir beings to the topics of desertion and digital souvenir landscape. This broad range of topics shows how deeply rooted the cultural traditions in history are and how important it is to reflect on it in today's society.

The latest publication is not only an academic work, but is also to be made accessible to the general public. Haile emphasized that the prepared results from 2019 to 2023 should focus on the everyday experiences of the Tyrolean population during the Nazi era. The two volumes of the "From the value of the memory" series are therefore a significant step in dealing with the history and promotion of consciousness for the challenges and changes associated with folk culture.

A highlight of the presentation was the well-known exhibition "From the Gauhaus to the country house. A Tyrolean NS building and its history", which took place at the same time with a supporting program of lectures, tours and readings and thus promoted a deeper examination of the matter.

If you are interested in the content of the new anthology, you can buy it for 25 euros in the Tyrolean State Archives. Further information can be found directly at the institution and represent a valuable resource for everyone who wants to deal with the history of Tyrol and the culture of remembrance.

The state government's commitment to remember more consciously will also be visible in the future initiatives with the aim of promoting cultural identity and at the same time taking responsibility for one's own history. In this context, it is remarkable that the publication not only offers academic insights, but also stimulates the discussion and reflection. The importance of this work for science and society cannot be assessed highly enough.
