MediaMarkt plans XPress markets: New opportunities for Innsbruck
The competitive landscape in electronics trade is becoming increasingly challenging, and MediaMarkt has drawn consequences from it. The company plans to expand its presence through up to ten new XPress markets. These smaller shops are said to be a reaction to the growing competition through online giants such as Amazon, Cyberport and Alza. Jan Niclas Brandt, Managing Director of MediaMarkt Austria, explained that future growth will take place in the form of smaller shops. So far there are three of these XPress locations in Leibnitz, Gmunden and Fürstenfeld.
The new XPress markets will offer a sales area of 800 to 1,200 square meters, which is significantly more compact compared to the larger locations that are 1,500 to 4,000 square meters. This strategy could also be important for Innsbruck city center, where the possibility of returning the electronics retailer. MediaMarkt had previously operated a location in the Tyrol department store before the company moved to the cyta to Völs.
renewed presence in Innsbruck
The return of MediaMarkt to Innsbruck city center could be a valuable addition to the previous electronics offer. After moving the shop in the Tyrol department store, there was a noticeable decline in electronic supply in the city center. With the new XPress markets, MediaMarkt could use the existing demand for electronic products and thus recover the customers.
The first sales figures and feedback indicate a successful start of the XPress locations. The presence of MediaMarkt is a positive signal for the neighbors and other shops in the existing locations. There are already strong sales and satisfied customers in the cyta, which indicates a healthy demand that may be further strengthened by returning to the city center.
market developments and outlook
The current economic framework conditions present the trade industry and media market for challenges. The market environment has tense the consumer retention, followed by a two -year recession. Brandt from the MediaMarkt speaks of mixed sales developments in October, while the consumer mood increase again in November. The demand for smartphones and televisions in particular remains strong. Kitchen and beauty devices also show an upward trend, while IT products are currently less in demand.
For MediaMarkt, the upcoming Christmas business is of central importance. Brandt points out that consumers order less online in the first half of December and rather want to pick up the products directly in the markets. The late orientation of the Black Friday this year increases the importance of this sales phase. In the long term, MediaMarkt would like to expand its offer and plan to include health and hearing aids in the range.
MediaMarkt is a leading electronics retailer in Austria with sales of over 1 billion euros and employs around 2,800 employees in 56 branches. A quarter of the turnover comes from online sales and the option for collection in the shop. The development of these smaller XPress formats could stabilize the market shares of MediaMarkt in a rapidly changing environment.
