Theater Josefstadt: season 2025/26 starts with Sartre dirty hands!

Josefstadt, Österreich - The stage of the Josefstadt is preparing for an exciting season 2025/26. Föttinger, the director of the theater, has announced his waiver of a press conference, which caused a sensation after an emotional incident in the previous year. The season begins on September 4 with the play "The dirty hands" by Jean-Paul Sartre, directed by David Bösch. This work deals with the difficult balance between political practice and moral integrity and is considered a significant example of Sartre's philosophical considerations on responsibility and freedom.

Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980) was a key philosopher of the 20th century, known for his work in the areas of existentialism and phenomenology. His most influential works include "being and nothing" (1943) and "existentialism is a humanism" (1945), which illuminate its views on human freedom and responsibility. Sartre's experiences during the Second World War shaped his political and philosophical development and led to a deeper examination of the topic of freedom under repressive regimens, which is reflected in his essay "The Republic of Silence". He got involved in the left politics for over 30 years and, after his return to Paris in 1941, founded the organization Socialisme et Liberté, even if it only showed limited effects.

First premiere of the new season, Daniel Kehlmann's play on September 6 will be the play “Easter”, which processes the Corona pandemic in the direction of Stephanie Mohr. Another highlight of the season is the co -production with the Deutsches Theater Berlin: "Schicklgruber" by Jan Veldman and Neville Tranter, which celebrates its premiere on September 25th and addresses Hitler's last days in the bunker.

The schedule also includes two classic works by William Shakespeare, "Summer Night Dream" and "Hamlet", which are staged by Josef E. Köplinger and Stephan Müller. In addition, the staging of "A German Life" by Christopher Hampton is realized by Andrea Breth, as is a new piece by Felix Mitterer with the title "Zemlinsky", which tells about the composer Alexander Zemlinsky. Föttinger's farewell as director of October 23 will be celebrated with Thomas Bernhard's "Theatermacher" on the direction of Matthias Hartmann.

A look at the past two decades

Föttinger draws a positive record of his 20-year management, in which he had over 20 million euros in sponsorship money, two general renovations and a total of 288 premieres, including 70 premieres and 38 premieres. The final of the season will be designed on April 29 with the premiere of "What a nice end" by Peter Turrini, in the direction of Janusz Kica.

The large number of new productions and the balanced mix of classical and modern promise an exciting theater play and invite the audience to deal with the profound topics of human nature. The Theater der Josefstadt remains a central place for cultural discourses and aesthetic challenges.
