The day, known as the "Fête des Voisin" or festival of the neighbors, aimed to strengthen social relationships between the residents of a residential area. This idea quickly resonance and led to the official introduction of the "European Neighbors’ Day "in 2004, which celebrates millions of people in Europe in May, as the website day of the neighborhood.
The role of the neighborhood in residential construction
In Lower Austria, 28 non -profit building associations manage a total of 147,000 residential units. Neighborhood is considered consciously designing element in residential construction, with initiatives such as the day of the neighborhood being crucial for harmonious cooperation. However, the urban neighborhoods face challenges. Historical developments such as industrialization led to the dissolution of village communities and the formation of urban structures. Social inequality has grown in recent decades, which results in spatial conflicts. According to urban research, physical proximity and social interaction are not always synonymous, since many relationships are now digitally maintained, as is explained on the side ZFL neighborhoods.
The phenomenon of alienation is evident in society, where suspicious looks or silence often make contact between neighbors more difficult. Especially in times of Corona it became clear that physical proximity does not automatically mean social proximity. Despite all the challenges, the promotion of neighborly contacts remains essential for the individual and community quality of life.
A network of neighbors and active cooperation strengthen the community and protect against loneliness, which is why it is important to actively shape living together. The importance of neighborhood as a social fact is becoming increasingly clear: it requires commitment and the will to overcome the barriers of everyday life.
