The focus: Survey on the social situation is now starting!

Science Minister Eva-Maria Holzleitner today underlined the importance of the 2025 student social survey, which serves as a central source of information for affordable study and the compatibility of study, work and childcare. By mid-June, all ordinary bachelor, diploma and master students in Austria are invited to take part in this greatest survey of students. The online survey is carried out by the Institute for Higher Studies (IHS) and is accessible via the universities. Extraordinary students who complete courses with more than 30 ECTS points can also bring their opinion.

The student social survey, which has been carried out regularly since the 1970s, offers valuable insights into the financial, health and social situation of students in Austria. Minister Holzleitner emphasized that the results of this survey can initiate political improvements. The topics dealt with in the survey include study conditions, financial situation, work -related employment, health, living situation and experiences of discrimination.

Important data and survey targets

The data of the social survey flow into the core report of the Sola and the "materials on the social situation of the students 2026", which are expected to be presented to the parliament in spring 2026. The Sola data are also used in the European comparison report, the next publication of which is planned for May 2027. For the survey, the participants are given the opportunity to take part in a raffle of 100 vouchers worth 50 euros. These incentives are intended to increase the participation rate and ensure that the survey draws a comprehensive image of the student situation.

The student social survey is also an important information and decision-making basis for university policy. It is accompanied on a project advisory board that includes representatives of various institutions such as the Austrian university conference, the Austrian university and other relevant bodies. This shows the interdisciplinary approach that is necessary to adequately grasp and address the needs of the students.

insight into previous surveys

In addition, 29 % of the students stated that they were severely or very severely affected by financial difficulties. The survey also shows that access to universities is socially unbalanced, especially at public universities. The influence of parenting on the study is considerable, and students from less educated families often begin with their studies.
