Electricity and gas prices rise: Here you can save in Austria!

Salzburg, Österreich - Energy prices in Austria have experienced a worrying increase since the beginning of 2025. According to 5min.at the main reasons for this increase are the end of the electricity price brake and the increased network costs. Despite a slightly falling inflation, the cost of budgetary energy remains high, especially after the elimination of important support measures such as the network cost grant.

A change of the energy provider can, however, bring considerable savings. Analyzes of the comparison portal "tariffe.at" show that consumers can achieve different high savings when changing electricity providers in various Austrian federal states.

savings potential in the federal states

The largest savings in electricity are currently recorded in Salzburg, where households can save up to EUR 214.62 per year. The other federal states with noteworthy savings are:

  • Styria: 198.19 euros
  • Burgenland: 181.20 euros
  • Carinthia: 177.24 euros
  • Lower Austria: 176.90 euros
  • Upper Austria: 134.27 euros
  • Vienna: 127 euros
  • Vorarlberg: 35.23 euros
  • tirol: 11.76 euros

In the Gas area, the savings are even higher. The greatest saving is in Burgenland, where households can save up to 268.42 euros annually. Here are the savings for gas at an overview:

  • Burgenland: 268.42 euros
  • Styria: 246.96 euros
  • Lower Austria: 231.48 euros
  • Upper Austria: 221.89 euros
  • Vienna: 206.23 euros
  • Carinthia: 175.32 euros
  • tirol: 144.48 euros
  • Salzburg: 75.53 euros
  • Vorarlberg: 66.96 euros

Change as a financial solution

Especially households with high electricity consumption can achieve considerable savings by changing the provider. According to Tagesschau save families who use 5,000 kWh in the year, an average of 918 euros annually. This corresponds to a discount of 43.2%. Singles that only consume 1,500 kWh benefit from savings of 277 euros or 37.5%.

The pricing for new customers shows that the prices of the alternative providers were already under those of the basic supply offers before the end of the price brake. Due to increased network charges that are no longer subsidized by the federal government, the costs for basic care customers can increase drastically, often until the fees are doubled.

Current prices and market conditions

The current prices for electricity and gas in the Austrian average household, which consumes 3,500 kWh of electricity and 15,000 kWh of gas, vary greatly. According to E-Control , the cheapest electricity prices such as Illwerke VKW (893.70 euros) can be found, while the cheapest guest tariffs from Energie Graz are offered with 1,535.81 euros. These prices contain all network charges as well as taxes and levies.

In summary, it can be said that the energy management situation in Austria is still tense, but there is potential for considerable financial savings through conscious decisions of consumers and change of provider.
