Stocker is fully behind Wöginger despite corruption!

In the middle of the current investigations into political corruption, the club chairman of the ÖVP, August Wöginger, remains the focus. ÖVP boss Christian Stocker confirms that he is also behind Wöginger in the event of a first-instance conviction in the Finance Causa Braunau. In an interview with "profile" Stocker said that he did not believe in a conviction of Wöginger, and referred to the process of Sebastian Kurz as an example of the need for caution in charges and convictions. Stocker also admitted that the assumption of attorney costs was briefly justified and he trusts in Wöginger's presumption of innocence, which is charged with abuse of office. This indictment was raised by the Economic and Corruption Prosecutor's Office (WKStA).

Wöginger is faced with the accusation of intervening at the former chief of cabinet of the Ministry of Finance, Thomas Schmid, to determine a public transport mayor for the board of the tax office for Braunau, Ried and Schärding. The alleged intervention is said to have taken place in 2017 when Wöginger was already a member of the National Council. Investigators rely on chats between Schmid and Wöginger, who give the impression of unfair influence. Schmid is considered a key witness in connection with the larger casinos Austria (Casag), the roots of which are in the "Ibiza scandal".

The allegations in detail

The indictment against Wöginger contains the allegation of abuse of office. He is referred to as the determination offender and is said to have played a key role in a chain of destination that favored a party -friendly candidate. According to the WKSTA, two officials from the Ministry of Finance, who are also charged, preferred a less suitable candidate for party political reasons. These officials played an important role in the illegal position. Schmid has already stated that Wöginger supported the mayor's request.

Wöginger himself asserts his innocence. He argues that he has had no influence on the commission. Despite the indictment of its trust in Wöginger, the ÖVP states and sees no reason to doubt its representations. Objection can be raised against the indictment, which is why it is not final. The penalties for abuse of office vary between six months and five years in prison.

political corruption in the broader context

Political corruption is a complex topic that is often associated with non -improper personnel policy and the “government of amateurs”. As the BPB states, corruption is a universal phenomenon that occurs in many areas of society. The term itself is not defined uniformly, but is typically understood as an abuse of public power for private advantages. This problem is particularly clear in the context of ongoing corruption scandals and the associated challenges for democratic states.

The social norms and values of corruption are variable and are subject to constant change. Corruption can occur in democracies and dictatorships, whereby Hermann Heller argues that the cases in dictatorships are more common. In view of the current developments, not only the anti -corruption measures are discussed intensively, but also to reform the urgency in order to improve transparency and integrity in the political system.

In view of these facts, it remains to be seen how the developments around Wöginger and the associated Causa Braunau will continue to be. The ÖVP insists on its trust, but the financial, legal and political consequences of this situation could have far -reaching consequences.
