Stocker attacks Kickl: EU asylum reform is overdue!

Österreich - Chancellor Stocker recently requested a fundamental revision of the EU asylum rules and criticized the negotiation of the FPÖ, in particular that of Herbert Kickl. According to kosmo.at defends Stocker's stop due to the overload of the school system and positions Austria in a group of EU countries that strive for a reform of asylum law. He is disappointed that Kickl, instead of looking for constructive solutions, is more interested in destruction. Stocker had hoped that Kickl was "reinvented" in the negotiations, which turned out to be wrong.

A crucial topic in the asylum policy of Europe is the revision of the Dublin regulations that are currently being discussed in the Member States. The EU has passed a regulation on asylum and migration management, which was accepted with 322 to 266 votes. Among other things, this regulation stipulates that Member States have to refer to asylum seekers or provide financial and technical support, as the Europarl.eu . An important part of the new package is the introduction of a mechanism to react to the sudden climbs of the migrant influx and the review of third-country nationals at the EU boundaries in a procedure that lasts up to seven days.

reform needs and fundamental rights

The need for independent control mechanisms to protect fundamental rights is also discussed. The parliament has also decided to introduce a uniform system to recognize refugee property and subsidiary protection status. This includes new rules that enable asylum seekers to work at least six months after the application. A revised EURODAC database is used irregularly to store data in the EU, which concerns the electronic recording and monitoring of refugee streams.

The existing asylum law instruments are repeatedly adapted as part of the goal of forming a common European asylum system (GEAS) since 1993. The eu relies on fundamental principles such as solidarity and a fair distribution of responsibility among the Member States, which are set in Article 80 of the TFEU. Reforms have been initiated from Maastricht to Lisbon since the contracts to adapt asylum policy to both humanitarian necessities and the challenges of migration pressure.

future steps and challenges

With the new regulations that come into force after the publication in the EU's official gazette, the Member States must ensure their national implementation within two years. The dynamics in European asylum policy are closely related to the German political example, to which Stocker compares the current coalition in Austria. Here he feels confirmed by the ideological fragmentation in just a few areas, the overcoming of which he sees as a necessary prerequisite for social cohesion.

The challenges of asylum policy are so diverse, and it remains to be seen how the EU's political and technical measures will prove in practice. Stocker emphasizes that with regard to the regained credibility and trust of the population, one must act in order to promote both consumption and investments.
