Styria chooses: Nine parties are fighting for the sovereignty
Today is an important day for Styria: a new state parliament is elected. From 6.30 a.m., voters have the opportunity to vote. A total of 941,509 citizens are entitled to vote, and there are nine parties on the ballot papers. The representatives of the ÖVP, SPÖ and FPÖ are particularly prominent, while smaller lists occur especially in Graz and the surrounding area. There is no percentage hurdle in Styria, which means that every voice counts. The mandates in the 48-seat state parliament are distributed over four constituencies, and due to the increased population, there are small changes in the distribution of mandate.
The choice promises an exciting race, especially between the big parties. The ÖVP, which was the strongest party with 36 percent in 2019, tries to defend its leadership position. The FPÖ, which achieved positive results in the last election of the National Council, would like to replace the ÖVP. At the same time, the SPÖ also has great ambitions under top candidate Anton Lang and strives for the position of the governor.
voting and polling stations
The polling stations open today at different times. Some, as in Mooskirchen, start at 6.30 a.m. Others, as in the Volkshilfe Senior Center in Weiz, only open at 10 a.m. The closing times also vary: You can choose in Graz until 4 p.m., while in other places it ends at 10 a.m. Voters should find out in advance to ensure that they can submit their voice in good time.
results of the election
As soon as the polling stations in Graz close at 4 p.m., the first extrapolation is expected. Due to the complexity of the counting, in particular postal voting, the preliminary end result can only be available at 9:00 p.m. If the result is scarce, it could even take until Monday for all postal voting cards to be counted.
Today's choice in Styria is of great importance, since it decisively determines which party the country will rule in the future. The anticipation for the results is great and the citizens are invited to use their democratic rights.
