Styria votes: Nine parties are fighting for control of the state
Today is an important day for Styria: a new state parliament will be elected. Voters have the opportunity to cast their vote from 6:30 a.m. A total of 941,509 citizens are eligible to vote, and nine parties are on the ballot papers. The representatives of the ÖVP, SPÖ and FPÖ are particularly prominent, while smaller lists appear primarily in Graz and the surrounding area. In Styria there is no percentage threshold, which means that every vote counts. The mandates in the 48-seat state parliament are distributed across four constituencies, and due to the increased population there are small changes in the distribution of mandates.
The election promises to be an exciting race, especially between the major parties. The ÖVP, which was the strongest party in 2019 with 36 percent, is trying to defend its leadership position. The FPÖ, which achieved positive results in the last National Council election, would like to replace the ÖVP. At the same time, the SPÖ under its top candidate Anton Lang also has great ambitions and is striving for the post of state governor.
Voting and polling stations
Polling stations open at different times today. Some, like in Mooskirchen, start as early as 6:30 a.m. Others, like the Volkshilfe senior center in Weiz, only open at 10 a.m. The closing times also vary: in Graz you can vote until 4 p.m., while in other places it closes at 10 a.m. Voters should inform themselves in advance to ensure they can cast their vote on time.
Results of the election
The first projection is expected as soon as the polling stations in Graz close at 4 p.m. However, due to the complexity of the counting, especially postal votes, the provisional final result cannot be available until around 9 p.m. If the result is close, it could even take until Monday until all postal votes are counted.
Today's election in Styria is of great importance because it has a decisive influence on which party will govern the country in the future. There is great anticipation for the results and citizens are invited to use their democratic rights.
