Winter magic in Styria: First snow inspires the regions

In the night from Thursday to Friday, winter surprised Styria with its first snow. The residents, especially in the south and west of the state, enjoyed a snow -capped landscape. But while the white splendor is welcomed in some regions, the joy in the state capital Graz is only of short duration, since mild temperatures are already annoying there.

According to Geosphere Austria, up to eight centimeters of snow fell in the south of Styria. In Graz, too, the citizens were able to enjoy a few centimeters of fresh snow, especially at the city's edges. Friedrich Wölfelmaier from Geosphere Austria notes: "In Graz it has plus grades again, so the snow will not last long." Nevertheless, there is good news for southern Styria, where the snow is expected to lie longer.

snow in the west of Styria

The west of Styria was also lucky and was able to look forward to a thick blanket of snow. From packing to Voitsberg, many meadows and houses are wrapped in white. These winter conditions already led to initial challenges on the streets. Drivers have to be particularly careful and adjust to slippery conditions.

The north of Styria, on the other hand, remained comparatively small on the first night. A look at Leoben shows that this picture could change in the night of Saturday. Wölfelmaier said that new snow is expected from the Ennstal to Mariazellerland. Due to the cooler temperatures in the north, it is likely that the snow will stay there longer.

early winter surprises

The question of whether the Styrians have to expect a cold winter cannot yet be answered clearly. Wölfelmaier emphasizes that a trend towards milder winters has been determined in recent years. Nevertheless, another more mild winter could be imminent. "In the past, snowfall is generally not a bad sign," he adds. The next two weeks bring more stable weather conditions, which are a bit warmer than on this frosty Friday, but move on average.

Even if the first snowflakes often ensure joy, the winter slump on the shoulders of drivers and commuters also leaves challenges. It remains to be seen how the weather situation will develop, since snow and elevated temperatures will compete together in the coming days.
