Safe roads for seniors: Experts warn of new dangers!
In Styria, a troubling series of pedestrian accidents caused a stir. Three people were seriously injured in the past week, and tragically an older pedestrian died, as ORF Steiermark . The majority of the accident victims were over 60 years old, which shows that older road users are in a vulnerable position. Peter Felber, a traffic expert from the Board of Trustees for Road Safety, warns that every third road user will be over 60 years old by 2030. Felber emphasizes that it should not be about forbidding older people, but instead to rebuild the vehicle so that driving remains safe even in old age. To this end, the board of trustees performs around 100 workshops every year, which give seniors practical tips for safe driving and behavior in traffic. Electric vehicles and electroscooters, of which he recommends, are particularly dangerous that older pedestrians should keep high visibility through light clothing and increased caution when crossing the streets, especially in zones with high traffic.
In a further aspect of traffic safety, Felber explains that the amount of existing zebra crossing can reduce the effectiveness of its use. Many pedestrians take zebra crossing less seriously if they occur too often, while drivers often do not adhere to the speed limits. In fact, only a third of the pedestrians actually cross the street at these marked areas.
