Leibnitz in the sign of the climate: Community conference with over 200 participants

The fourth Styrian climate protection community conference recently took place in Leibnitz under the motto "Climate male communities". More than 200 people, including numerous mayors and environmental managers, took part in this important event. This conference, which dealt with the adaptation and support of the municipalities in the area of climate protection, was initiated by climate protection state councilor Ursula Lackner.

This year's conference offered the participants a platform for exchange about current developments and challenges in climate protection. Hans Peter Hutter from MedUni Vienna gave an impressive overview of the health effects of climate change, which raised awareness of the urgency of this topic.

topics of the conference

The delegates received valuable information on various aspects of climate protection, whereby the following topics were particularly the focus:

  • Community grants for energy and climate
  • CO2 accounting in the municipality
  • Blackout-Provision
  • Photovoltaic as a dual solution against weather extreme
  • Energy communities
  • The concept of the "climate -neutral city" with examples from Leibnitz and Villach

Ursula Lackner emphasized the need for further support: "We have set up an extensive funding program that helps the communities. The exchange of experiences is crucial so that not every community has to reinvent the wheel." This is shown in the intensive cooperation between the municipalities that have already implemented many successful projects.

State Councilor Simone Schmiedtbauer emphasized that sustainable approaches are particularly important at the local level. "Those responsible on site are the most important partners because they know the local conditions best," she said and thanked the numerous mayors for their committed participation and their previous achievements in climate protection.

honors for outstanding services

A special moment of the conference was the award of two municipalities that have been part of the climate alliance for 30 years: Spielberg and Weiz. Friedrich Hofer, Managing Director of the Styrian Climate Alliance, presented the certificates and emphasized the importance of such initiatives: "Climate alliance communities implement numerous measures at the local level and at the same time support the preservation of the rainforest in Brazil."

In addition, two E5 communities were honored for their remarkable efforts as part of the "E5 program for energy-efficient communities". The market in Feldkirchen achieved an impressive 40 percent implementation degree during its first auditing and is therefore recognized for its services. The municipality of Liezen has already acquired four “E” in its fifth certification and has therefore positioned itself as a European pioneer in the field of renewable energies.

The E5 program pursues the ambitious goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2040 and supports the participating communities with structured aid programs. "These community projects are groundbreaking for a sustainable future," is the state councilor's conclusion. The continuous process of external auditing ensures the quality and progress of the E5 communities and promotes an increasing quality of life and a reduction in energy consumption.
