Austrian Post starts Sunday delivery: Are we ready?

Wien, Österreich - The Austrian Post will introduce Sunday delivery for premium shipping customers in Vienna from October 6, 2024. This step represents an expansion of the service and initially focuses on four districts: Inner city (1010), Leopoldstadt (1020), Landstraße (1030) and Wieden (1040). In order to meet the new requirements, around 70 additional employees have already been hired for Sunday service, while the personnel search in Graz and Linz continued to run. This reports kosmo.at .

The pilot project aims to test the delivery of packages on Sundays and is aimed exclusively at online retailers who pay an additional charge of around 3 to 5 euros per package. The regular parcel delivery remains limited from Monday to Saturday. If the test runs are to be successful, the post is planning to include the entire urban area of Vienna in the first half of 2025, followed by the other state capitals Graz and Linz. A far -reaching expansion is also already in planning.

criticism and working conditions

The announcement for Sunday delivery is not only approved. The VIDA union expresses concerns about the expansion plans and demands fair working conditions for the subcontractors. Markus Petritsch, the chairman of the Straße department, has already raised questions about the need for Sunday delivery and the working conditions of the deliverers. The collective agreement for small transporters does not cover Sunday work, which will initiate further discussions about fair payment and working hours.

Walter Oblin, the designated general director of the post office, emphasized the importance of this measure and referred to the company's innovative strength. The adjustments to market needs have been promoted since the introduction of Saturday delivery in 2015. Peter Umundum, Management Director of Package & Logistics, sees a significant contribution to the high season in Sunday delivery, especially at events such as Black Friday and in the Christmas season. Customers are informed about the Sunday delivery via email or by the post app, according to 5min.at .

In addition, external transport companies are used as part of the test operation to ensure the logistical implementation. For their services on Sundays, the deliverers receive a surcharge and working time compensation, which could increase the attractiveness of the position.
