Marcel Hirscher: Dream Island of Mallorca and the future of the ski star!
Graz, Österreich - Marcel Hirscher is muscular and fit in a current Instagram posting while he is in Mallorca. He describes the island as a dream destination for cyclists and emphasizes the variety of landscapes, which range from coastal roads to mountain rides. However, his sporting future remains unclear, although he indicates a possible continuation of his career. After all, Hirscher recently published a post with his girlfriend, which attracted attention in social media. A strong comeback after his injury can only be assumed.
On December 2, Hirscher suffered a cruciate ligament tear in the left knee during training on the Reiteralm. This serious injury forces him to end his comeback season prematurely. Hirscher, who is now starting for the Netherlands, has already been operated on in Graz. In the previous season he finished 23rd at the giant slalom in Sölden, while he did not get into the evaluation in the following slalom races in Levi and Gurgl.
risks in the ski alpine
The violation of Hirscher fits into a worrying trend in the ski alpine. In the 2023/2024 season, the number of injured skiers rose to an estimated 46,000 to 48,000, which is a significant increase compared to the previous season. The review of the basic season 1979/80 shows a significant withdrawal of the injured by 52 percent. Nevertheless, the risk of inpatient treatments is stable at 1.73 per 1,000 skiers, which results in about 7,200 to 7,300 inpatient treatments, 57 percent of the injured skiers had to be hospitalized.
The increase in knee injuries is even more worrying. The risk has increased from 2.70 to 3.01 per 1,000 skiers. Shoulder and upper arm injuries have also increased. The proportion of collision violations in all skiing injuries is 21 percent and shows that security on the slopes is an increasingly important topic.
Hirscher himself said that he had been looking forward to the races and described the last eight months as intense and fun. However, the uncertainty about the future of his career is difficult on the athlete, while at the same time he has to deal with the reality of numerous injuries in ski alpine sports. Krone informs about his recent developments, while ZDF ski foundation analyzed the increase in skiing injuries.
