Large stadium plans in Graz: capacity expansion to 25,000 spectators!

On June 5, 2025, there are significant news about the development and modernization of the stadiums in Graz and Nuremberg, both of which are affected by comprehensive feasibility studies. In Graz, the current capacity of the stadium in Liebenau is 15,300 seats. However, an ambitious plan provides for an increase to 20,071 seats to create the opportunity to carry international matches. According to the Krone the field is lowered by 1.5 meters and the stadium moat is removed, which is realized by the creation of three additional rows of seats.

New roof structures and increases of the stands are as well as the integration of a 4000 m² photovoltaic system. The storm fans in particular are placed in the north curve and the GAK supporters in the south curve. A remarkable aspect is the conversion of 5,000 seats into standing room at home games, which can raise the number of spectators up to 23,500 with normal series and 25,000 at Stadtderbys. Changes are also provided for VIP guests that expand the VIP area to 2016.

challenges and planned construction period

The challenges in Graz are enormous, because in addition to the noise pollution and traffic, over 1,000 new parking spaces, for example at the Murpark shopping center, have to be created. The construction period is estimated for a total of four years - two years for planning and two years for the construction work, with the aim of the work by 2029 at the latest. Mayor Elke Kahr emphasizes the need for a great effort, while Vice Mayor Judith Schwentner warns support of the federal government. The feasibility study was finalized at the end of May 2025 and the city government as well as the clubs Sturm and GAK were actively involved in the process.

In another city, Nuremberg, a feasibility study for evaluating the Max Morlock Stadium was initiated in November 2022. This study includes several partners, including PROProject Planning Management & Projektberatung GmbH and AS + P Albert Speer + Partner GmbH, as well as their collaboration with the 1. FC Nürnberg e.V., which acts as the main tenant. The collection of data and the analysis of the use were supported by various urban offices, including the city planning office and the Stadium Nuremberg Betriebs GmbH.

The need for modernization and the planned developments

The Max Morlock Stadium plays a central role in the city's sports landscape and is regularly frequented by tens of thousands of visitors. It is the venue for international matches and other events, but the condition of the stadium no longer corresponds to international standards. This even led to a failed application for UEFA Euro 2024. The city of Nuremberg invests significant funds every year, but sees the costs increasingly increasing, which hinders a real improvement in the situation.

The feasibility study carried out in two phases not only analyzed the existing challenges, but also identified development potential for both the stadium itself and for the surrounding sports area. The results were presented to the city council in July 2023 and show a variety of ways to upgrade the sports infrastructure in Nuremberg.

In summary, both in Graz and in Nuremberg, there is an important challenge to make the stadiums future -proof and to meet the requirements of modern football. Further information on the developments in Nuremberg are available on the page Stadium Nuremberg
