41 million euros for the renewal of the A9: construction start today!
ASFINAG announced today, on April 2, 2025, that it will invest 41 million euros in the renewal of the A9 Pyhrnautobahn. This extensive renovation affects a six -kilometer section between Lainberg and Windischgarsten and includes the repair of 15 bridges and nine water protection systems. All noise protection is also renewed while traffic continues on the highway.
The start of the work is connected to a total lock of the Graz directional lane, with oncoming traffic on the route towards Linz. The renovation of the transfer bridge of the B138 at Roßleithen/Windischgarsten as well as the on-board and departure ramps represent special challenges.
project period and phases
The first phase of the renovation work is expected to be completed in November 2025. From March 2026, the opposite lane will be renovated before the final work on the noise barriers begins in spring 2027. These should be completed by June 2027, which is intended to make a sustainable improvement in traffic infrastructure in the region. The entire process is coordinated by ASFINAG and carried out taking into account a high security standard.
This investment step is part of a broader initiative to modernize the Austrian infrastructure. The Koralbahn between Graz and Klagenfurt, with a heart in the form of the 32.9 kilometer long Koralm tunnel, is also promoted very significantly. The construction is mainly carried out by the use of the new Austrian tunnel tree method, while up to 500 people are employed on the construction site, as OE24 emphasizes how decisive these steps for long-term security and efficiency of the street infrastructure are.
