Steger calls for a remigration commissioner: EU has to improve deportation!

Europa - Petra Steger, EU MP of the FPÖ, reacted to an interview by EU Commissioner Magnus Brunner in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung on May 23, 2025. Steger criticizes the reporting on an alleged tightening of asylum policy in Europe and emphasizes that only every fifth is actually deported with a legally binding deportation notice. These figures raise questions about the efficiency of EU deportation policy, which Steger feels insufficient. In addition, she is skeptical about Brunner's return directive, which in her opinion will not bring any real changes.

The measure proposed by Brunner should apply exclusively to migrants whose recognition rate is below 20%, is also questioned by Steger. It points out that the implementation of deportations in the EU is poor and that the interpretation of the convention of human rights by European courts continues to make these efforts more difficult. The MP also criticizes the views of Brunner to control African authorities and sees them a neocolonial attitude.

claims for a remigration commissioner

A central concern of Steger is the demand for the appointment of a real remigration commissioner to replace Brunner. She describes the criticism of the national sovereignty of Hungary, which pursues a restrictive migration policy, as unacceptable. Steger speaks in favor of exposing the sometimes controversial asylum and migration pact and instead taking Hungarian politics as a model.

Looking back at the migration situation in Europe, it turns out that the EU continues to be aimed at enabling faster deportations illegally. As reported tagesschau.de, 400,000 return decisions were made in 2023, but only 65,000 migrants actually left. This discrepancy illustrates the challenges that the European institutions face. EU parliamentarians require a rapid agreement on the return directive to delay rejected asylum seekers more quickly.

asylum and migration reform at EU level

The EU's new migration and asylum package includes revision of the Dublin regulations for the determination of the responsible Member State for asylum applications. With a majority of 322 to 266 votes, the EU Parliament has adopted a regulation on asylum and migration management, which aims to tighten the procedures and increase efficiency. Among other things, the changes include the introduction of a mechanism for reaction to the sudden climbs of the migrant stream, reports europarl.europa.eu.

Parliament has also decided that Member States have to shed up asylum seekers or provide support. These measures are intended to serve effective coping with migration pressure in the EU and promote common responsibility among Member States. New rules for dealing with rejected asylum seekers as well as the identity and security of those willing to enter are also part of the package. The aim is to harmonize the standards for asylum procedures and to ensure more quickly processing of applications.

The developments of the EU in the field of migration and asylum illustrate the level of complexity of the topic and the different approaches of the Member States to cope with the challenge. In this context, Steger calls for a clearer position and more detailed measures from the EU to ensure effective use of illegal migration.
