Strong earthquake shakes Crete: Tsunami warning output!

Eloúnda, Griechenland - Today, on May 22, 2025, the Greek island of Crete was shaken by an earthquake of thickness 6.1. The earthquake occurred in the early morning and had its origin at a depth of 68.9 kilometers, about 58 kilometers northeast of the coastal town of Eloúnda. This information was confirmed by the US-Erdbiebenwarte (USGS). Residents of the region described the vibrations as long -lasting and intensive. Although the quake in areas such as the Peloponnes peninsula, the Kykladen and even in Cyprus, reports from Greek media have not reported any injuries or major damage, which is soothing for the affected population.

The Greek authorities reacted quickly and published a tsunami warning. As a precaution, this was sent to the people in the region by SMS, although it later turned out that there was no tsunami. Thanasis Ganas, head of the geodynamic institute in Athens, gave the all -clear and expressed that hardly any debt was expected. He indicated that the current quake was not related to the earthquakes registered near Santorini since the end of January 2025.

earthquake in the Aegean

The quake in the Aegean occurred on May 14, 2025 at 01:51 am local time and had its epicenter near the island of Kasos. With a depth of 78.4 kilometers, this was another event in a region that is often affected by seismic activities. The shocks were also felt on the Greek islands of Kos, Rhodes and Crete as well as to Cairo in Egypt. The presence of a tsunami alarm on Rhodes shows the caution of the authorities in relation to such natural events.

The head of the Greek earthquake authority, Efthymios Lekkas, assumes that no strong aftershocks can be expected and emphasized that the recent quakes should not be considered to be a harbinger of a larger earthquake. In this regard, progress in seismological research and the development of early warning systems are of great importance.

early warning systems and tsunami preparation

In view of the dangers of tsunamis, it is important to mention the developments in early warning technology. The German-Indonesian Tsunami Early Warning System (GITEWS), which was put into operation in 2008, plays a decisive role in the danger evaluation and warning in endangered regions. The "Seiscomp" software analyzes data from hundreds of earthquake measuring stations and enables a quick generation of warnings. This shows how significant preparation for such natural events is, especially with regard to the clarification of the population and the development of emergency plans.

In summary, it can be said that the recent earthquake in front of Crete is another example of seismic activity in the region. However, the quick reaction of the authorities and the progress in early warning technology are encouraging and contributing to better protect the population.
