Strong record after 100 days: ÖVP cheers over mammoth budget!
Österreich - On June 6, 2025, the coalition partners of the black and red government take a first record of their cooperation. ÖVP general secretary Nico Marchetti commented on the first 100 days of the government and describes the services as positive. Despite the challenging budget situation and existing political differences, Marchetti is convinced of the stability of the coalition. He expresses special pride on the decision of the double budget, which he calls "mammoth task".
Marchetti emphasizes that the decision was made as a “team performance without a dispute”. A central point of ÖVP policy is the topic of security, where he considers the handwriting of his party to be particularly visible. When renovating the budget, care was taken to not endanger the economy and to set targeted economic incentives. Future reforms should also promote economic growth, especially in the area of energy, where the costs for Austrian households and industry are particularly high compared to the EU.
financial challenges
However, the financial challenges are considerable. The new finance minister Markus Marterbauer from the SPÖ presented the budget for the next two years. While the previous governments left a million hole, the current budget focuses on renovation and savings. The necessary measures include higher contributions from banks and energy companies as well as additional fiscal loads for super -rich citizens.
In order to reduce the budget deficit to below 3% of GDP by 2028, extensive reforms are planned. This includes the reform of the bank tax, which is aimed at 350 million euros annually. In addition, energy companies should contribute 200 million euros to the renovation. Tax measures are also taken, including the increase in profit tax to private foundations and a planned redomment tax for property sales.
investments in the future
Despite the savings, the budget is increased in the education and health sector. A total of 2.3 billion euros are planned for necessary investments. An important element is the skilled worker offensive with 230 million euros for qualification measures. However, social services such as family allowance are not adapted to inflation for two years, which is affected by the population.
The statutory budget provision has already been decided at the parliamentary level. Initiators from the ÖVP, SPÖ and NEOS support the budget renovation measures, which also include an increase in betting fees and the end of the tax exemption for photovoltaic modules. It is criticized by the FPÖ that no comprehensive financial effects of the measures are recognizable. With the adoption of these various measures, the government tries to enable timely intervention and to adapt to the budget situation while at the same time strengthening Austria's position within the EU. The next steps in this direction are eagerly awaited, especially in view of the upcoming challenges in the budget and financial sector.
