State energy group GB Energy founded: wind power as a solution!
Borkum, Deutschland - The energy transition faces numerous challenges. In the past two years, the pressure on the progress of renewable energies has increased, in particular with the new Definition of natural gas and nuclear power plants by the EU. This development is accompanied by leading fossil groups, which have increasingly withdrawn from projects to the energy transition, in particular from the promising development of floating wind farms ( Econews ).
Another critical factor is public opinion, which is influenced by open negative statements by personalities such as Donald Trump to renewable energies. In this context, the British Socialist Party announced the establishment of the state energy group "GB Energy" during its election campaign to promote the development of Floating Offshore Wind. The British Parliament has already made a corresponding decision to promote wind energy from the British waters.
potential of floating offshore wind
The Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) highlighted the enormous importance of floating offshore wind for global decarbonization in his report "Floating Offshore Wind-A Global Opportunity". This process could play a central role in achieving net zero emissions by 2050. The report states that 80 % of the global offshore wind resources are in water that are deeper than 60 meters and that the technical potential for floating offshore wind in many countries exceeds the turbines installed ( gwec ).
Five countries with high potential for floating offshore wind have been identified: Ireland, Italy, Morocco, Philippines and the USA. These states, together with the leading markets such as the United Kingdom, South Korea, France and Japan, are to cause considerable growth in the field of floating wind power. Ironically, Ireland could cover its current electricity requirement up to 69 times and Italy up to 2.6 times through floating offshore wind if the necessary requirements are created.
examples from industry
Another example of progress in the field of wind energy is the planned offshore wind farms Northern Light I and Northern Light II, which are to be realized by Vattenfall and BASF in the North Sea. These projects are to be implemented without government subsidies and together offer an installed output of around 1.6 gigawatts. This amount of energy could cover the annual consumption of around 1.6 million German households. It is planned that Northern Lights I will go online until 2027 and Northern Lights II until 2028, subject to final investment decisions ( Vattenfall ).
These initiatives not only illustrate the importance of wind energy in the future energy supply, but also the need for an active political leadership to promote these markets. The withdrawal of the fossil companies from the development of floating wind farms could lead to an innovation stop at short notice, but the current developments and the establishment of "GB Energy" show that there are opportunities to advance the transition to renewable energies.
