Fuel prices are falling, but Austria remains expensive: ÖAMTC raises the alarm!

Vienna, Österreich - In May 2025, the fuel prices in Austria are somewhat cheaper than in the previous months, but the ÖAMTC still keeps the current prices too high. According to the mobility club, a price reduction of around ten cents per liter was justified because the crude oil prices have dropped. The current price for diesel is 1.475 euros per liter, while super gasoline costs around 1.489 euros. Compared to the previous month, the prices have dropped by 3.8 cents for diesel and 2.1 cents for super. However, this development does not bring the prices to a satisfactory level compared to the previous year's prices in September 2024, whereby the crude oil price was still higher by 10 euros per barrel at the time.

The ÖAMTC emphasizes that despite a CO2 price increase at the beginning of the year there is enough scope for further price reductions. In addition, price reductions in some adjacent countries are clear. In Italy, for example, prices fell 4.4 cents for great and 4.7 cents for diesel in May. Slovenia and Croatia report similar declines: 6 cents (super) and 7.5 cents (diesel) in Slovenia as well as 6.9 cents (Super) and 7.4 cents (diesel) in Croatia. This price development shows how different the costs of fuel within Europe are.

prices in European comparison

travelers who drive abroad by car can possibly save money through planned fuel stops. According to ADAC, countries such as Poland and the Czech Republic in particular have the cheapest fuel prices, while Denmark has the most expensive prices at the other end of the scale. In terms of diesel, the Czech Republic leads the list of cheapest prices while Switzerland has the highest observed prices. The price differences can be significantly: up to 58 cents for super gasoline and up to 66 cents for diesel can be between the countries.

  • Current prices in neighboring countries:
    • Italy: great - 1.489 euros, diesel - 1.475 euros.
    • Slovenia: maximum prices 1.434 euros for great, 1.445 euros for diesel.
    • Croatia: maximum prices 1.41 euros for great, 1.28 euros for diesel.

For vacationers who travel to Italy, it will advise to recharge your batteries in Austria or Slovenia, as the prices are often cheaper there. In Italy, the prices are 20 cents higher for great and 10 cents for diesel compared to the domestic situation. In Slovenia, however, prices often remain lower than in Austria.

Finally, the ÖAMTC driver recommends checking prices before a planned journey to find the best offers. The Institute for Higher Studies (IHS) also points out that the crude oil prices sunk are not adequately passed on to consumers. The current price development remains a topic of great interest for many drivers in Austria.
