Selenskyj counters Trump: No delivery of the Crimea to Russia!

The Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj has illustrated his rejection of a US proposal to the subject of Crimea, using a historical review of Donald Trump's words from 2018. Selenskyj strives to convince Trump to represent others than the one he recently expressed. Trump explicitly criticized the annexation of Crimea by Russia at the time and described Selenskyj's blockade to hand over the Crimea as "very harmful to the peace negotiations" with Moscow, reports OE24

In a publication on Telegram, Selenskyj shared a statement by the US government from 2018, which was written during Trump's first term. This declaration signed by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo rejects Russia's attempt to annex the Crimea, which was condemned in an international context. Annexion itself, carried out in 2014 after the fall of the Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukowitsch, happened under considerable international protest, such as RP Online reported.

Trump's current influence

In the meantime,

talks between representatives of the United States, European countries and Ukraine are underway in London, in which an armistice is discussed. The US Vice President JD Vance has described the proposals that contain legal recognition as Russian as "very fair". However, these plans could put pressure on Ukraine, which may be forced to work on Russia's conditions. Military expert Claudia Major has feared that such suggestions would mean a dictation peace, which could influence the conflict in favor of Russia, according to the report of ZDF .

The talks and US proposals seem to contain some classic Russian demands, including the waiver of Ukraine on NATO membership and the abolition of US sanctions against Russia. If Ukraine and Europe do not agree to these conditions, Russia could take the opportunity to continue the war and to weaken Ukraine.

Selenskyj now tries to challenge Trump's perspective in the implementation of the war negotiation process and to point out the rejection of the Crimean Anexion from 2018 in order to clarify that the Ukrainian attitude is based on international support and should not be subordinate to Moscow's wishes.
