Salzburg's project: billions for green energy and security!
Kaprun, Österreich - The commissioning of the "Salzburgleitung" took place on June 10, 2025 as part of a ceremony. The project, which includes an investment of around one billion euros, is intended to ensure the safe and sustainable power supply in Austria. Salzburg's governor Wilfried Haslauer and numerous political decision-makers were present at the ceremony.
The salt bravery line extends over a length of 128 kilometers and connects the substation in Elixhausen near Salzburg and in Kaprun. The voltage of the existing cable was increased from 220 kV to 380 kV, which enables more efficient integration of renewable energies and reduces the dependency on electricity imports. The construction of the project lasted five years, with the permits used for 77 months.
workplace acquisition and economic effects
During the construction period, more than 7,000 jobs were created, of which over 2,000 were created in Salzburg alone. The added value in Austria is estimated at around 500 million euros, more than 100 million of them in Salzburg. These measures are part of a larger plan to invest a total of around nine billion euros in the expansion of the power grid in the coming years in order to create over 90,000 jobs by 2034.
The commissioning of the salt bravery line is seen as an important milestone for the electricity infrastructure and the security of supply in Austria. The construction also required the dismantling of 193 kilometers of 220 kV and 110 kV lines as well as 678 masts. A total of 65 cable kilometers and 229 masts are dismantled as part of the project, whereby the disassembly work is carried out in seven sections.
sustainability and environmental protection
As part of the project, 200 compensation measures for flora and fauna were implemented. The investment volume for these nature conservation measures is over 47 million euros. These targeted measures underline the commitment to a sustainable energy infrastructure in Austria.
The Austrian energy infrastructure is currently in a transformation process that requires the integration of new forms of energy. Innovative storage technologies and comprehensive adjustments in the electricity and gas network are necessary to ensure stable and climate-friendly energy supply. A central component of this development is the integrated Austrian network infrastructure plan (ÖNIP), which aims at the integration of renewable energies and the intelligent networking of electricity, gas and hydrogen infrastructures. The expansion of the salt bravery line is in line with the goals of the Renewable Expansion Act (EAG), which creates the legal framework for the expansion of renewable energies. With these initiatives, Austria wants to become climate neutral by 2040, which requires a sustainable transformation of the energy infrastructure in the coming decades.
