Salt burglanes: Millions of investment for the green light of the energy future!

Kaprun, Österreich - On June 5, 2025, the official commissioning of the new salt bravery management took place as part of a ceremony. The attendees included Wilfried Haslauer, the governor of Salzburg, Michael Strugl, the CEO of Verbund, and Peter Kollmann, the Chairman of the APG's supervisory board. The investment in the salt bruise is around 1 billion euros and pursues the goal of a safe and sustainable power supply in Austria and Salzburg. The approval process lasted 77 months, while the construction period took five years. The management of the management started in stages at the end of January 2025 and comprises a 128 km connection between the Salzburg substation (Elixhausen) and Tauern (Kaprun).

The existing salt bravery line was upgraded from 220 kV to 380 kV, which enables more efficient integration into the power grid. This not only contributes to reducing the dependency of electricity imports, but also creates over 7,000 jobs during the construction period, which corresponds to a value added of 500 million euros in Austria. APG also plans to expand the electricity grid in the expansion of the power grid by 2034. This requires an acceleration of the approval procedures and a digital transformation of the energy system.

disassembly and new building

As part of the Salzburglei management project, extensive disassembly work is also required. In the coming months, 678 old masts and 193 km of lines will be broken down. Overall, the number of cable kilometers in Salzburg is reduced by 65, and 229 masts are removed. The disassembly work is carried out in seven sections, whereby the corresponding documents and tickets are available for interested citizens in the download area. The dismantling lines include the 220 kV lines between different substances and several 110 kV lines.

For example, the dismantling includes the 220 kV line from Salzburg Zwanwerk to the Tauern Dutch office and several 110 kV lines in the area. Demonstrations that have already been carried out affected the 110 kV line between the KW Arthurwerk and the Annaberg/Strobl substation.

part of the energy transition

The salt bravery line is not only an infrastructural project, but also an important contribution to the energy transition in Austria. In the context of these efforts, the Ministry of Climate Protection recently presented the integrated network infrastructure plan (ÖNIP). This plan, which is considered the first of its kind in the EU, pursues the goal of raising the proportion of renewable energies to 100 percent by 2030. The proportion of renewable electricity generation in the public power supply in Austria is currently almost 87 percent. The ÖNIP supports the expansion of the energy infrastructure for renewable energies, hydrogen production and the integration of all energy sectors.

The expansion of the electricity transmission networks, the development of the gas network and a hydrogen start network form the focus of the plan. Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler emphasizes the need for stable power grids and a close connection to the industry to the hydrogen infrastructure. In this context, future transport capacities in the power grid, especially in Eastern Austria, are shown in detail.

The official inauguration of the salt bravery line thus represents an important step towards a sustainable and secure energy future, which is not only locally, but also in the national and European context. This initiative will undoubtedly help to better manage the challenges of climate change and energy supply.
