Salzburg's fight against illegal holiday apartments: 300,000 euros punishment!
Hof bei Salzburg, Österreich - In Salzburg, the city administration consistently acted against illegal holiday apartments and achieved impressive results. Since September 2020, landlords of holiday apartments on platforms such as Airbnb have been obliged to register with the responsible communities. According to a report by krone.at , 692 apartments were registered in the first three years. During this time, 227 complaints from the population and 44 reports about online platforms, which led to 195 hearings.
As part of these controls, 109 offers were removed from the platforms, which means that these apartments can now potentially be available to the regular housing market again. This has already led to an increase of almost 300,000 euros in punishments, with 169,000 euros being collected in 2024 alone. The responsible Vice Mayor, Kay-Michael Dankl, was pleased with the decline in new registrations for the holiday rental. "The controls work", says Dankl, "the number of new registrations goes back, the number of cancellations is increasing."
