Philosophy meets theology: Andreas Scheib enriches Salzburg's university

On October 1, 2024, Andreas Scheib will start service at the Catholic-Theological Faculty of the University of Salzburg. The 57-year-old philosopher, originally from Ludwigshafen am Rhein, complements the team as a professor of basic philosophical questions of theology and brings fresh ideas to the department. His research focuses on philosophical-theological border areas that are of central importance for modern philosophy, such as the well-known "cogito argument" by the philosopher René Descartes.

Schebs academic career is remarkable. He studied philosophy and German studies at the Universities of Mannheim and Heidelberg. His dissertation in Mannheim, which deals with the theory of individual substances at Géraud de Cordemoy, already shows his strong connection to the history of philosophy. In the past 14 years he worked at the Catholic Faculty of the University of Bochum and worked there in a similar field of research. He also took on important tasks in research and teaching after his mentor Theo Kobusch left the chair.

An influential thinker of the history of philosophy

The habilitation of Scheib in Heidelberg, enriched with the topic "Emancipation of the Ratio. Descartes' Project of Naturalization of Wissen", testifies to his deep examination of the role of reason in philosophy. In addition, he gained experience through teaching at the Universities of Freiburg and Bonn, which sharpens his profile as a versatile philosopher.

Scheib sees philosophy as an essential foundation of theological discussions. In his courses, he emphasizes that students recognize and understand the link between philosophical and theological questions. He is convinced that without a solid philosophical basis theological questions can only be treated inadequate. At the same time, he adds that philosophical discussions often combine with theological topics.

personal enthusiasm for Salzburg

For Scheib, the new position at the KTH Salzburg is an attractive challenge that not only offers him the opportunity to pursue its scientific interests, but also to explore the beauty of the city and its surroundings. In spring he plans to enjoy the breathtaking nature of Salzburg. As a music lover, he feels particularly in good hands in the Mozart city and looks at the musical inspiration there.

With Andreas Scheib, KTH Salzburg has gained a committed teacher and thinker. Through his professional expertise and passion for philosophy and theology, he will undoubtedly set fresh impulses, both for the students and for the broader academic community. The university community may hope for exciting developments and an enriching exchange with it.
