Illegal short -term rentals: Salzburg city government raises the alarm!

Salzburg, Österreich - In Salzburg, the cases of illegal short -term rentals have increased significantly last year. A total of 61 advertisements were submitted to such rentals, which is 20 more than in the previous year. Vice Mayor Kay-Michael Dankl (KPÖ Plus) was satisfied with the progress that were achieved by the new department. "Action Scharf" means that controllers are now being carried out in order to punish violations - more than 100 rentals have already been stopped, as Salzburg.orf.at . Nevertheless, the problem remains: there are always "repeat offenders" who illegally rent despite punishments and Dankl calls for a doubling of the entry penalty to 5,000 euros.

strict measures in Vienna

Vienna has also introduced strict regulations for short -term rentals in parallel to developments in Salzburg since July 1, 2024. 337 advertisements have already been received by the construction police, reported residential building councilor Kathrin Gaal (SPÖ). In Vienna only rentals of a maximum of 90 days a year are allowed, exceeding is only possible with an exceptional permit - and this must be approved by the other apartment owners in the building. The construction police are actively looking for violations on platforms such as "Airbnb" and "Booking.com" and carries out personal checks to check the offers. These measures are part of the reaction of urban politics to the international trend towards short-term letting, such as explained.

The 2nd district, which is at the top with 44 advertisements, is particularly striking, followed by the 1st and 3rd district. Gaal emphasizes that urban politics actively campaigns for the preservation of the living space and ensures that private rental in the travel context does not lead to a massive decline in the range of housing.
