Director noise at schools: Who will take our children to the future?

In the coming months, a central challenge at the middle schools in Hallein, Saalfelden and Mariapfarr as well as at the elementary schools in Bischofshofen and Bruck will be clear: the acute lack of new directors. Education Councilor Daniela Gutschi (ÖVP) blames several reasons for this. On the one hand, there are a variety of retirements that increase the need for new managers. On the other hand, there is a clear disinterest in these positions, since the considerable administrative effort detrigions many potential applicants. Many people prefer to opt for teaching to work directly with the students instead of accepting an administrative office, as Gutschi explained: "We try not to simply suffocate people in the administration, but that you can put the design in the foreground."

In order to counteract this problem, the education system plans to loosen the requirements for starting management positions, so that the necessary training can be completed in the future even during the ongoing professional life. In addition, more hours should be provided for administrative assistants. The decline in the open teacher posts is positive. In autumn 2024 there were still 790 positions, at the moment there are only 43. This is primarily attributed to the commitment of students who already teach during their training and, as Gutschi explained. "Thank God - there are enough interested parties." This positive development, according to the State Councilor, shows itself both at the University of Education and the University.

Committed activities in the educational landscape are to be continued in order to increase the attractiveness of teacher training and the management position. The targeted address of the students will continue to play a central role. The schools strive to promote the interest in management positions and to offer help in coping with administrative tasks in order to successfully prepare the next generations of educational managers.
