Ex-IS supporter remains in custody: Will return to the danger?

Wien, Österreich - The return of the former IS supporter Evelyn T. from Syria caused a sensation in Austria. The 26-year-old was brought back from the Al-Roj camp with her seven-year-old son on March 1 and arrested directly at Vienna-Schwechat Airport. The reason for this is an upright arrest order on the part of the Vienna public prosecutor, which has imposed custody due to the risk of another crime inspection. According to the court spokeswoman Christina Salzborn, it was noted that the judiciary cannot rule out whether Evelyn T. was still ideologically connected to IS, which justifies the continuation of her detention, as krone.at reported.

Evelyn T., who once overwhelmed the Islamic State (IS) as a teenager, became a mother in Syria in 2017 and finally voluntarily recognized the Allied troops on November 1, 2017. Her defense lawyer Anna Mair described the detention as a "security -proof" and announced that it would complain against this decision. While Evelyn T. is in custody, her son is looked after by the Vienna child and youth welfare. Mair argues that the family is ready to accept the son, and assumes that his return to the family circle is urgently necessary, such as 5min.at reported.

In the meantime, the ex-IS supporter Maria G., who was brought back at the same time as Evelyn T. In contrast to Evelyn T., the Salzburg public prosecutor waived the imposition of custody. Maria G. was also integrated into the IS system, but had successfully rejected an application for her children in the past. These different treatments raise questions about the legal procedures that apply to returnees from conflict -rich zones and concern public security.
