Farewell to the Salzburg Mozartkugel: Work in Grödig closes forever!

In a tragic chapter of the Austrian confectionery industry, the final end of December 5, 2024 came out for the production of the famous "real Salzburg Mozart ball" in Mirabell in Valigig. After years of financial difficulties and the bankruptcy of Salzburg chocolate, the work, known for its masterpieces of chocolate and marzipan, hits its company. The last steps of production were shaped by a melancholic atmosphere, while the machines stood still on Friday and the last rate of delicious balls rolled off the assembly line, such as the Kurier reported.

It is over, Austria mourns

The work had produced up to 12,000 tons of confectionery per year in better times; In the end it was only one ton annually. The closure brings a drastic 40 percent reduction in the workforce from 160 to currently 40 employees, which will finally have to leave the site by the end of the year. Managing Director Friedrich Plail hopes to secure at least a few financial resources for creditors, while negotiations with potential buyers, such as OE24 reported.

In the future,

the production of the Mirabell products, which also include the Mozart balls, will continue in an unnamed European country. The US group Mondelez, which holds all rights to the product, plans to relocate, but keeps covered with the exact production location. Despite the uncertain future and massive protests on the part of the unions, it remains to be recorded: Exactly where and how things go with the beloved Mozart balls remains a big question mark for the time being.
